Majaz, Interpretation, The Qur’anAbstract
The interpretation of the Qur’an continues to evolve through both traditional and modern approaches. The study of majaz(metaphor) is essential, as literal translation often obscures contextual meaning; thus, an in-depth linguistic and semantic analysis is required. This research aims to examine the use of majaz in the Qur’an from linguistic and semantic perspectives, to explain its implications for exegesis, and to enhance translation quality and cultural contextual sensitivity. Employing a qualitative library-based method with a descriptive-analytical approach, data were collected from relevant literature and analyzed interpretatively to uncover meanings and conceptual relationships in majaz interpretation. Linguistically, majaz means “to pass beyond its original place,” while terminologically, it refers to the use of a word beyond its literal meaning due to associative relations and contextual cues that prevent the literal sense. In the Qur’an, majaz is classified into three types: majaz isnadi (attribution to a non-literal subject), majaz lughawi (metaphorical word usage), and majaz khitabi (rhetorical expression). The concept of majaz was first introduced by Abu Ubaidah and later developed extensively in Qur’anic exegesis, generating debates among supportive, rejecting, and moderate scholars.
